Summary of the PrepCom III Session for WSSD New York March 25-April 5

The Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), acting as the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), met for its third session from 25 March to 5 April 2002, at UN headquarters in New York. Nearly 1500 representatives of governments, UN agencies and convention Secretariats, international organizations, and Major Groups attended. The purpose of the session was to consider the Chairman’s Paper transmitted from PrepCom II, address ways of strengthening the institutional framework for sustainable development, evaluate and define the role and programme of work of the CSD, and agree on a document containing review and assessment, as well as conclusions and recommendations for further actions.(provided by Langston James Goree IV,director IISD Reporting Services)

Since political and financial support from major developed countries to the UN system is on the decrease, attempts have been stepped up to embrace the private sector, especially transnational corporations as deliverers of sustainable development. However, global rules that have been shaped to turn natural resources and people into commodities and markets are resulting in major problems.

I. Introduction Indonesia, the largest archipelago country in the world, needs and is committed to sustainable development. Indonesia was an active participant of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED, also known as the “Earth Summit”) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1997, Indonesia launched its National Agenda 21, the preparation of which involved over 1,000 participants from various stakeholders over a two year period. The National Agenda 21 provides a reference to mainstream sustainable development principles into the country’s national development planning

1. Introduction

Indonesia, the largest archipelago country in the world, needs and is committed to sustainable development. This is reflected among others through the launching of the National Agenda 21 document in 1997 which provides a reference to mainstream sustainable development principles into the country’s national development planning. This was followed by the release of Sectoral Agenda 21 documents in 2000 covering mining, energy, housing, tourism, and forestry sectors. Recently, several local governments initiated the compilation of Local Agenda 21.

On behalf of my organization, a forum of 465 NGOs and POs (Peoples Organization) of 24 provinces in Indonesia, I would like to express my sympathy to the people of New York concerning the tragedy of September 11. I condemn this crime and would like to assure you that the majority of Indonesian people condemn this act. I wish you a strong and speedy recovery from this tragedy. I hope that you will be strengthened by it and most importantly, be able turn your anger and sadness into productive ways of creating peace and sustainability in the world.
